“Penguins can pick up your spirits any day,” as Anna says. In a collaboration with www.ojhæklerier.dk, she has made quirky, round crochet penguins from soft cotton yarn.

Crochet a penguin

Abbreviations:
Rnd = round
st = stitch
dc = double crochet
ch = chain
[*…*] repeat until end of round.

Crochet needle size 2,75 mm

This is a crochet pattern of medium difficulty.

Body:
Start with a magic ring with 6 dc.
Rnd 1: 2 dc in every dc (12 st).
Rnd 2: *1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc* repeat until end of round (18 st).
Rnd 3: *1 dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc* repeat until end of round (24 st).
Rnd 4: *1 dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc* repeat until end of round (30 st).
Rnd 5: *1 dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc* repeat until end of round (36 st).
Rnd 6: *1 dc in next 5 dc, 2 dc in next dc* repeat until end of round (42 st).
Rnd 7: *1 dc in next 6 dc, 2 dc in next dc* repeat until end of round (48 st).
Rnd 8: *1 dc in next 7 dc, 2 dc in next dc* repeat until end of round (54 st).
Rnd 9: *1 dc in next 8 dc, 2 dc in next dc* repeat until end of round (60 st).
Rnd 10-19: 1 dc in every st (60 st).
Rnd 20: *1 dc in next 8 dc, 2 dc together in next dc* repeat until end of round (54 st).
Rnd 21: 1 dc in every st (54 st)
Rnd 22: *1 dc in next 7 dc, 2 dc together in next dc* repeat until end of round (48 st).
Rnd 23: 1 dc in every st (48 st)
Rnd 24: *1 dc in next 6 dc, 2 dc together in next dc* repeat until end of round (42 st).
Rnd 25: 1 dc in every st (42 st)
Rnd 26: *1 dc in next 5 dc, 2 dc together in next dc* repeat until end of round (36 st)
Rnd 27: *1 dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc together in next dc* repeat until end of round (30 st).
Rnd 28: *1 dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc together in next dc* repeat until end of round (24 st).
Rnd 29: *1 dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc together in next dc* repeat until end of round (18 st).
Rnd 30: *1 dc in next dc, 2 dc together in next dc* repeat until end of round (12 st).
Rnd 31: 2 dc combined in next 6 dc (6 st).
Stuff the body and sew the opening closed.

White body part:
Make 11 ch. Turn with 1 ch.
Row 1: 2 dc in first stich, 8 dc, 2 dc in last stich (12 st).
Row 2: 2 dc in first stich, 10 dc, 2 dc in last stich (14 st).
Row 3: 2 dc in first stich, 12 dc, 2 dc in last stich (16 st).
Row 4-11: 1 st in every stich (16 st).
Row 12: 2 dc together, 12 dc, 2 dc together (14 st).
Row 13: 2 dc together, 10 dc, 2 dc together (12 st).
Crochet a border of dc – stop at the beginning of row 13.
Skip 2 st – crochet 10 triple treble in the same stich, skip 2 st, 1 dc, skip 2 st, crochet 10 triple treble in the same stich, skip 2 st, 1 dc.
Close – leave enough yarn to be able to sew on the white body part.

Wings (2 pcs.)
Crochet in the colour of the body:
Start with a magic ring with 6 dc.
Rnd 1: 2 dc in ever st (12 st).
Rnd 2-3: 1 dc in every st (12 st).
Rnd 4: *1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc* repeat until end of round (18 st).
Rnd 5-9: 1 dc in every st (18 st).
Crochet the opening closed, close and cut the end of the yarn. Remember to leave enough yarn to be able to attach the wing to the body.
Sew the wings unto the body with a needle.

Eyes (2 pcs.)
Crochet with black yarn:
Start with a magic ring with 6 dc.
1 Rnd: 2 dc in every dc (12 st)
Shift to white yarn:
Rnd 2: 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc.
Shift to black yarn.
Close.
Embroider a tiny white dot on the black part of the eye.
Sew the eyes unto the head; you decide the exact location.

Beak
Upper beak:
Crochet with orange yarn:
Start with a magic ring with 6 dc.
Rnd 1: *1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc* repeat until end of round (9 st)
Rnd 2: *1 dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next dc* repeat until end of round (12 st)
Rnd 3: *1 dc in next 3 st, 2 dc in next dc* repeat until end of round (15 st)
Crochet the opening closed and cut the yarn. Leave enough yarn to be able to attach the beak to the head.

Lower beak:
Crochet with orange yarn:
Start with a magic ring with 6 dc.
Rnd 1: *1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc* repeat until end of round (9 st)
Rnd 2: *1 dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next dc* repeat until end of round (12 st)
Crochet the opening closed and cut the yarn. Leave enough yarn to be able to attach the beak to the head.

Attach the upper and lower beak to the penguin’s head.

Should you wish a penguin that can hang from the ceiling, you can apply a row of ch in the wanted length. Attach the final cord to the top of the penguin’s head.
